How to Organize Your Closet in 5 Easy Steps

Organizing a closet can feel overwhelming, no matter the size. But don’t put it off until the space is already too cluttered and seems impossible to manage. The process of organizing your closet is often a necessity, not a choice. Maybe you’ve moved into a new home, started a new job, or need to switch out your seasonal clothes. No matter the reason, here are five tips to help you organize your closet without any further headaches.

Declutter

This is the most important step. It’s impossible to organize your closet without clearing out the items you don’t need. Get rid of clothing that doesn’t fit you or your style, as well as anything in poor condition. Make more space for the things that you actually wear. For more information on this crucial step of the process, check out how to declutter your closet here.

Store Your Clothes by Season

The second step towards better organization is to separate your clothes by season. Don’t waste priceless space in your closet with items you won’t be able to wear in the coming months. Fold out-of-season clothes into boxes or bags and store them under the bed or other out of the way or hard to reach places. To do the same for your footwear, take precautions not to damage them, especially boots and other winter shoes. Fill them with paper or old socks to maintain their shape before storing them in appropriately sized boxes. To take your organization a step further, tape a picture of the shoes to the box. Next time you reach for them,  you will know what’s inside without having to open it.

Group Your Items

Separate your clothing into categories like shirts, skirts, jeans, t-shirts, jackets, belts, etc. Once you’ve grouped your wardrobe, you’ll have a better idea of how much space you need for each category, making it easier to find the right place for them. As an added benefit, this will also make it so much easier for you to create outfits by combining items in each category. Have a meeting tomorrow? You just have to look through the shirts and skirts categories to find the best match for your look in a matter of seconds. You could even arrange the items in each category by color to make getting dressed even easier.

Invest in Hangers

When designing a well-organized closet, imagine your favorite boutique. Imagine how the clothing is organized by type. Check. We already took care of that. The next thing that comes to mind might be the hangers. They’re all the same. Matching hangers create a more organized and visually appealing look and can also serve a practical purpose in the everyday use of your closet. Standardized, quality hangers will help maintain the shape of your clothes and keep them from getting tangled up together or falling to the floor. Nothing’s worse than having to re-iron when you reach for one item and another two slip off.

Storage Solutions

Boxes, baskets, and other storage solutions are efficient ways to create an organized closet with easy access. Accessories like belts, bags, or scarves can make your closet feel crammed. Categorize these small items like the rest of your wardrobe and store them in boxes in those oddly shaped areas of your closet to make the best use of your space.

If you want to have an organized closet, it is important to have a good system. Once every item in your closet has a designated place, you’ll be more likely to return everything to its original spot, and it will be easier for you to keep your closet organized and clean.
